AN ICON REBORN

The VAF Signature i66 is an Australian icon. Originally developed in 1997, it was the first VAF loudspeaker in the then-new Signature Series, from which the larger sibling - the i93, was created. The newest generation is the biggest revamp in decades—every single detail was painstakingly refined to extract new levels of performance and realism previously never thought possible.

SPEAKERS THAT TELL THE TRUTH

The drivers are all-new for the i66 MKV, including SEAS Excel Nextel coated paper cone woofers and midrange drivers, modified by SEAS just for us. These are paired with a SEAS Crescendo soft dome tweeter, renowned for its exceptional detail and clarity.

Overall music presentation is smooth and involving, balanced and incredibly detailed, with the speed and accuracy VAF is known for. A new from the ground up crossover design provides pinpoint, three-dimensional imaging with a large soundstage that puts you firmly in the front row of the musical performance.

DESIGN AND CONSTRUCTION | WHERE ART AND SCIENCE MEET

The VAF Signature i66 MKV’s timber cabinet features a newly developed one-piece front baffle and is beautifully crafted to the highest standard in finely finished genuine timber veneers. The lower half of the baffle has been stepped out 12mm to perfectly time align the woofer with the midrange drivers and tweeter.

The internal midrange chamber has been uniquely shaped with non-parallel walls to suppress standing waves and reduce internal reflections.

The VAF Signature i66 MKV is at home in the highest fidelity stereo system. Uniformity of design across the entire VAF Signature Series also ensures that other VAF Signature Series models can be used in harmony with the VAF Signature i66 to create a multi-channel surround sound theatre system without peer.

Featuring a time-aligned driver array, the VAF Signature i66 MKV is a floor-standing four-driver, three-way loudspeaker. Each cabinet contains:

One 220mm Nextel coated paper cone woofer
Two 130mm Nextel coated paper cone midrange drivers
One 29mm double chamber soft dome tweeter

THE WOOFER AND MIDRANGE DRIVERS

At the heart of the woofers and midrange drivers is a magnet system that boasts a state-of-the-art linear Finite Element Analysis (FEA) optimization combined with a Titanium voice coil. This means precision and accuracy, creating an immersive and dynamic soundscape. With copper shorting rings strategically integrated, the inductance is linearized, ensuring low distortion.

The motor-design represents the state-of-the-art regarding linearity and low distortion. Low mechanical and electromagnetic damping ensure high quality reproduction of even the finest micro details in music. At the same time, the high-performance titanium voice coil former and its connection to the cone has very high power-handling, suitable for modern amplifiers (e.g. Class-D).

The speaker cones feature a "sandwich" construction of paper, coated with Nextel paint on the front surface and damping compound on the rear. The resulting cone is both lightweight and well damped; offering an extremely linear frequency response.

The woofers and midrange drivers are produced by SEAS to custom VAF specifications and differ from standard, off the shelf units.

THE TWEETER

The SEAS Crescendo tweeter is world famous as one of the finest soft dome tweeters ever produced. An optimally shaped dome and integrated wide surround manufactured by SEAS from SONOMEX ensures excellent performance and consistency. A high efficiency HEXADYM magnet system based on 6 radially magnetized NdFeB magnet blocks provide efficient ventilation and damping of cavities behind the dome, surround and voice coil.

A generously underhung voice coil with flexible lead-out wires, ensures low
distortion even with low crossover frequencies. A 6mm precision machined aluminium front plate with moderate horn loading ensures linear frequency response and reasonable efficiency.

The central part of the horn is made from chrome plated precision machined aluminium. A substantial injection moulded rear chamber made from zinc eliminates unwanted chamber wall resonances and conducts heat away from the magnet system.

TIME ALIGNMENT

All drivers are precisely time aligned within the cabinet in the horizontal plane to optimise phase and impulse responses, and so therefore maintain exact spatial recreation of the original sound wavefront as it was recorded. Time alignment is critical to maintain the correct reproduction of the highly complicated harmonic structures created by musical instruments.

DAMPING

Optimised internal damping is provided by VAF’s advanced HyperSoft acoustic material, effectively eliminating internal cabinet reflections and standing waves that interfere with the correct operation of the drive units.

An obvious and integral design feature on every VAF loudspeaker is natural, acoustically absorbent felt on the front baffle. The felt is fitted around each tweeter and midrange driver to accurately control dispersion and effectively eliminate diffraction effects—another source of distortion and colouration.

Manufactured from only first-grade MDF up to 50mm thick, cabinet construction is highly detailed. Precisely fully mitred joints and substantial internal cross-bracing characterise the superior quality of these loudspeakers.

Finishes include stunning crown cut, book-matched, genuine timber veneers including Australian Jarrah, Tasmanian Blackwood, American Walnut, Black Oak and American Oak. All of our speakers are made here in Australia, as such custom and bespoke finishes are available on request.
